The father of the thriller genre is Alfred Hitchcock with memorable films like Rear Window, Vertigo and Psycho. Silence of The Lambs is one of the most critically acclaimed one in modern times. It launched Jodie Foster to stardom. After establishing herself as an actor, Foster started directing. Her latest effort is Money Monster, a thriller that will leave you with a bitter taste on your mouth. It’s no surprise she chose this genre, working in thrillers and taking from the masters that preceded her. For being raw and shocking, Money Monster succeeded as a creative piece.
Money Monster is about a TV personality, Lee Gates (George Clooney) who is forcefully interrogated live on his show by a bankrupt viewer, Kyle Budwell (Jack O’Connell). On the other side of the mic, his loyal producer, Patty Fenn (Julia Roberts) is listening helplessly. Completing the cast are Dominic West, Caitriona Balfe and Christopher Denham. Clooney also produces with his company Smokehouse Pictures. Aiding Clooney on the producing task is Grant Heslov, Daniel Dubiecki and Lana Alameddine. The writers are Alan Di Fiore, Jim Kouf & Jamie Linden.
The movie has a cynical but realistic tone, partly because of Clooney’s signature touch. His production company is not known for fairy tales (filmography including The Ides of March, Argo, and Our Brand is Crisis), telling it like it is no matter how brutal. This style suits Jodie Foster, whose last directing effort was The Beaver (2010), also melancholic.
On the acting department, newcomer Jack O’Connell fits right into the chemistry between Julia and George. These veteran stars have worked together previously in Confessions of a Dangerous Mind and the Ocean’s Trilogy. George Clooney and Julia Roberts have an established dynamic between them, both on and off screen. It’s an accomplishment to have found a young actor to keep up with this duo. O’Connell had his break in Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken (2014), the failed but notable World War II drama.
Julia Roberts’ versatility knows no bounds. From Pretty Woman and Erin Brockovitch, to being the lady behind the scenes ignored by her co-workers in Money Monster. George Clooney makes a believable douchebag, from the moment you see his nasty act, you foresee bad things in this character’s future. The ending of the film will leave you numb and bewildered. After a general dynamic pace there’s an abrupt resolution. This strategy is often used for thrillers, keeping you at the edge of your seat to finish without the bang you were expecting. The shots make use of handycams that follow the actors. The lighting has cold colors fitting for the genre. The police is useless as ever, only making a situation worse.
There’s a metalinguistic element about Money Monster that is very beautiful. It’s a movie about a TV show, with cameras on cameras, covering the lives of people behind and in front of the screen. The subject also deals with the delicate subject of bombs, that alarm every one. It shows how average people are taken to the edge when the going gets tough. It mentions also the mechanics behind money and investments, how some people don’t have a clue about how the system actually works. Parallely, it depicts people insensitivity towards their fellow’s problems. The message to the audience is: there’s morbid curiosity for a while but they don’t genuinely care about another’s tragedy.
The final recommendation is not to watch this movie if you want to be uplifted. The sensation afterwards is the opposite than Mother’s Day, my previous critic. Money Monster is a raw thriller, written masterfully, riveting with suspense and ending without a bang, with a sinister sense of humor, and a star-studded cast a 5/5.
